Amsterdam & Haarlem

January 6 & 7, 2012

Well we made it here safely! Traveling went smoothly- both flights left on time and arrived early which meant we got to Amsterdam at 4:45a instead of 5:55a. So while ya’ll were off to bed, we were drinking our coffee and getting ready for a day of touring.

Today we started off with a brief tour of Amsterdam- this country is so beautiful! The buildings are so old and still used, and they look so pretty setting on the canals. After about an hour of sightseeing in the bus we drove off to Haarlem which was about 20 minutes away where we visited the old St Bavo church. This church is known for its historic organ that was played by Handel and Mozart. We also walked over many bodies that are buried in underneath the floor in the church. After seeing the church we were given three free hours in Haarlem to look around, so we grabbed some lunch, went through many shops, and a farmers market too. We came back to the hotel to get some sleep and shower before getting dinner and then meandering around Amsterdam for a few hours.

A couple interesting things I’ve noticed already:
1. Everyone drives either a station wagon or a hatchback. Suzi would fit in here! Also, everyone seems to drive foreign cars, until I connected the fact that Ford & Chevy are actually foreign cars here- and I have seen just three Ford’s so far.
2. Everyone bikes everywhere- biker’s own the road! We’ve all gotten in their way quite a few times today and I’m not sure what they’ve said to me, but I’m pretty sure it was some dirty Dutch words!

That’s all for now- not too busy of a day so hopefully I’ll have more exciting things to share in the coming days!

Pce. & Blessings
